United flight cancelled? What you're owed

When United cancels, most travelers focus on rebooking and leave money on the table. A cancellation entitles you to a cash refund, and stranding often adds a hotel, meals, and — on covered international routes — cash compensation. Here's exactly what United owes you and how to claim it while you also get rerouted.

1. Claim your automatic cash refund from United

Under the DOT automatic refund rule, a United cancellation entitles you to a full cash refund to your original form of payment if you choose not to travel — even on a Basic Economy or non-refundable ticket. United must issue it within 7 business days for credit cards and 20 calendar days otherwise. Don't settle for a travel credit unless you want one.

2. A big schedule change counts as a refund trigger too

If United significantly changes your flight — a domestic delay of 3+ hours or an international delay of 6+ hours — you can decline the new schedule and take a full cash refund instead of flying. Rebooking onto a much later United flight is a choice, not an obligation.

3. Claim hotel, meals, and transport if stranded overnight

When the cancellation is within United's control (mechanical, crew, scheduling) and you're stuck overnight, United's Customer Commitment generally covers a hotel, meal vouchers, and transport. Ask at the desk or in the app — screenshot the offer, and keep receipts if you pay out of pocket.

4. Check for EU261 cash on covered routes

On flights departing the EU or arriving in the EU on United, a cancellation within United's control can owe you up to €600 in cash compensation under EU261 — entirely separate from your refund. Save your boarding pass and cancellation notice to file the claim later.

5. Rebook in parallel — don't wait on the refund

Getting home and claiming money are separate tracks. Lock in a seat first (on United, a Star Alliance partner, or another carrier), then file your refund and expense claims. Come to the desk with a specific alternate flight so you're not waiting on an open search while seats vanish.

Frequently asked questions

Does United owe me a refund if it cancels my flight?
Yes. Under the DOT automatic refund rule, a United cancellation entitles you to a full cash refund to your original form of payment if you choose not to travel — even on a non-refundable or Basic Economy fare. You don't have to accept a travel credit.
Does United pay compensation for a cancelled flight?
In the U.S., United guarantees a refund and, under its Customer Commitment, generally covers hotels, meals, and transport for controllable overnight cancellations — but there's no federal cash-compensation mandate. On EU-covered routes, a controllable cancellation can owe up to €600 under EU261, on top of your refund.
Will United put me up in a hotel if my flight is cancelled?
If the cancellation is within United's control and you're stranded overnight, United's commitment generally covers a hotel, meal vouchers, and ground transport. Ask at the desk or in the app; keep receipts if you have to pay yourself and claim reimbursement.
How long does United take to issue a refund?
Under the DOT rule, United must issue automatic refunds within 7 business days for credit card payments and 20 calendar days for other payment methods, to your original form of payment.
