- Am I owed compensation if my flight was cancelled for weather?
- Usually not cash compensation — both EU261/UK261 and US rules exempt 'extraordinary' or 'uncontrollable' causes like severe weather and air-traffic control. But you keep your refund and rebooking rights either way, and in the EU/UK the airline still owes you meals and a hotel while you wait.
- How much is EU261 flight compensation?
- €250 for short flights (under 1,500 km), €400 for medium (1,500–3,500 km), and €600 for long-haul (over 3,500 km) — paid when the cancellation was inside 14 days of departure or you arrive 3+ hours late, and the cause was within the airline's control.
- Does the US require airlines to pay compensation for delays?
- No. Unlike the EU, the US has no law requiring cash compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight. You're entitled to a full cash refund if you don't fly, free rebooking, and — for controllable disruptions — meals and a hotel. Involuntary bumping is the exception: DOT sets cash compensation of up to 4× your fare.
- Is a voucher the same as a refund?
- No. When the airline cancels, US DOT and EU261 both entitle you to your money back to your original form of payment. A voucher or travel credit only applies if you actively choose it — you can insist on cash.
