United cancelled or delayed my flight — what do I do, and what am I owed?

When United cancels or seriously delays your flight, two clocks start at once: the race for the last confirmed seat home, and the money United owes you. Most travelers win neither — they wait in line, take whatever rebooking United's system offers days out, and never claim the refund and expenses they're entitled to.

This is the playbook for both. Here's how to lock in the earliest seat — on United, a Star Alliance partner, or another carrier entirely — and exactly what United owes you for the disruption.

1. Rebook in three channels at once

The earliest confirmed seats go in minutes, so work the United app, the phone line, and the desk in parallel — whoever confirms first wins. The app often auto-offers a new seat; the phone line (try the premium or international reservations number, hold times are frequently shorter) can endorse you onto a Star Alliance partner; the desk can do both. Come with a specific alternate flight in hand rather than asking them to search from scratch.

2. Claim your automatic DOT cash refund

If United cancels, or significantly changes your flight (a domestic delay of 3+ hours or international of 6+), you can decline the new schedule and take a full cash refund to your original form of payment — even on a Basic Economy or non-refundable ticket. United must pay it within 7 business days for cards, 20 days otherwise. Don't accept a travel credit unless you actually want one.

3. Get a hotel, meals, and transport if stranded overnight

When the disruption is within United's control (mechanical, crew, IT, scheduling) and you're stuck overnight, United's Customer Commitment covers a hotel, meal vouchers, and ground transport. Ask at the desk or in the app, screenshot the offer, and keep every receipt if you have to pay out of pocket and claim it back.

4. Check for EU261 cash on covered routes

On flights departing the EU (or arriving in the EU on a United-marketed flight), a controllable cancellation or a 3+ hour arrival delay can owe you up to €600 in cash under EU261 — entirely separate from your refund. Save your boarding pass and the cancellation or delay notice so you can file later.

5. Rebook and claim in parallel — don't wait on the refund

Getting home and getting paid are separate tracks. Lock in a seat first, then file the refund and expense claims — never sit on an open search while the last seats disappear. If United's own flights are full, ask specifically to be endorsed to a Star Alliance partner or another carrier for the same class.

Frequently asked questions

Does United owe me a refund if my flight is cancelled?
Yes. Under the DOT automatic refund rule, a United cancellation entitles you to a full cash refund to your original form of payment if you choose not to travel — even on a non-refundable or Basic Economy fare. You do not have to accept a travel credit.
What is United required to do if my flight is delayed for hours?
If a domestic delay reaches 3+ hours or an international delay 6+ hours, that counts as a significant change and you can decline it and take a full cash refund instead of flying. For a controllable overnight delay, United's Customer Commitment covers a hotel, meals, and transport. There is no US federal cash-compensation mandate for delays, but EU261 can owe cash on covered routes.
Will United put me on another airline?
United can endorse your ticket to a Star Alliance partner or, in some cases, another carrier when its own flights are full — but you usually have to ask for it specifically. Come to the desk or phone agent with a named alternate flight and request the endorsement directly.
How long does United take to issue a refund?
Under the DOT rule, United must issue refunds within 7 business days for credit card payments and 20 calendar days for other methods, to your original form of payment.
